German digital economy federation BVDW said online radio continues to gain popularity, and gross investment in audio streaming is set to rise by more than 50 percent in 2015. BVDW was citing the Web Radio Monitor 2014, compiled by Goldmedia under commission from the Bavarian new media office BLM and from BVDW's own audio focus group. The monitor predicts that gross revenue from in-stream advertising to reach some EUR 137 million by 2015, up from EUR 65 million in 2013.
The monitor found there were 2,021 audio services in summer 2014 with 2,670 online radio streams. There were 1,711 pure web radio services, as well as 256 FM and DAB broadcasters who also stream their content. There are also on-demand players, personalised audio streams and user-generated radio.
The Web Radio Monitor found that 71 percent of online radio broadcasters are satisfied or very satisfied with their listening figures. It added that 55 percent of them take part in studies to measure the audience, or would like to do so. Commercial broadcasters expect advertising income to increase markedly.
Two thirds (66%) of online radio broadcasters expect the rise in the availability of mobile broadband to drive use of internet radio, and 33 percent of online listening is now carried out on a mobile device. Connected TVs account for 52 percent of online radio listening. More than two thirds (69%) of providers expected a significant rise in online audio use in motor vehicles in the period up to 2017.
