With AM and FM radio sliding ever more deeper into irrelevance as
listeners migrate to Internet radio, Disney programming is increasingly
making the transition to digital platforms.
Earlier this year came the news
that Disney was ditching almost all of its 24 radio stations across the
United States as only about 18 percent of its listeners were using AM
or FM broadcasts. The rest, Radio Disney officials said, were relying on
digital platforms such as satellite radio, mobile apps and Internet
streaming services.
So it’s not so surprising that earlier today came news that Internet
radio service Slacker Radio was adding Radio Disney content to its list
of featured content choices.
Slacker Radio said it is adding Radio
Disney, Radio Disney Junior and Radio Disney’s Top 30 Countdown to the
programming choices available for its 26 million users in the United
States and Canada.
Though Slacker Radio doesn’t have the 250 million users the popular
Pandora service has, Slacker Radio likes to boast that it has “10 times
the music” offered by Pandora. Slacker also prides its service on
hand-picked song choices rather than selections based on computer
algorithm, a process used by many of the other Internet radio services
such as Spotify.
Slacker Radio, like most of the other Internet
radio services, offers a free version that also features ads. A $3.99
monthly subscription lets users enjoy ad-free use, and a $9.99 monthly
subscription offers offline listening and other features, as well.
Already,
Disney-related ABC News and ESPN have been part of the Slacker Radio
offerings for a few years. The service has content agreements with Sony
BMG Music Entertainment, EMI, Universal and Warner, as well as with
smaller independent labels, too.
Radio Disney and Radio Disney
Junior already are available on Slacker Radio, and Radio Disney's Top 30
Countdown will begin this Saturday.
According to a press release from Slacker Radio, these are the descriptions of the three Disney selections to be featured:
Radio Disney - Radio Disney is the only 24-hour
radio network devoted to kids, tweens and families on a 24-hour basis
and is widely recognized as the first platform for many of today's most
popular young artists. Its Top 40 playlist is driven by listener
requests and represents major label recording artists.
Radio Disney Junior
- Radio Disney Junior features "Magical World of Disney Junior" with
music from popular Disney and Pixar movies; "Pirates & Princesses"
themed songs; and "Get Up and Move," dedicated to health and wellness.
Radio Disney's Top 30 Countdown
– Radio Disney's Ernie D hosts a weekly "Top 30" countdown show
featuring the hottest songs and interviews with kids and families'
favorite artists and celebrities.
